What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy helps your eyes, brain and body work together more efficiently.

Vision therapy is a personalized program of eye and body exercises designed to improve how your eyes move, focus, and coordinate. Unlike glasses or contact lenses that only correct how clearly you see, vision therapy trains your brain and eyes to work as a team—enhancing skills like eye tracking, focusing, and teaming.

Not only is your eye-brain connection strengthened, but vision therapy also strengthens the connection between your vision system and your body, improving fine visual motor skills (like handwriting and using tools), gross visual motor skills (such as balance, coordination, and sports performance), and visual perceptual skills. This holistic approach helps you navigate the world more confidently and comfortably.

What conditions can Vision Therapy treat?

Vision Therapy addresses a variety of visual and neurological challenges, as well as improves general visual performance.

Common conditions and areas Vision Therapy can help include:

  • Eye teaming problems (e.g., convergence insufficiency)
  • Focusing difficulties (accommodative dysfunction)
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Eye turns (strabismus)
  • Eye tracking issues (oculomotor dysfunction)
  • Visual processing delays
  • Reading difficulties
  • Symptoms related to brain injuries and concussion
  • Sports performance and coordination
  • Digital eye strain from prolonged screen use
  • Myopia (nearsightedness) control and management

Understanding our vision therapy program, step by step

We know that navigating your vision care — especially when it involves therapy, changes in routine, or new diagnoses — can feel overwhelming.

Below are some of the most common concerns.

Typically, vision therapy requires about 1 hour of in-office training per week, guided by our trained therapists. In addition, patients do approximately 30 minutes of home-based exercises, usually 5 days a week, to reinforce progress. The exact time and frequency depend on your individual needs and the specific program designed for you.

For patients who are unable to attend weekly sessions due to scheduling or distance, we will try our best to offer tailor-made routines that maximize the benefits with less frequent office visits.

Your commitment is key. You’ll receive a clear plan that outlines simple steps to follow at home. We’ll make sure you understand each part of it.

Although it requires time, consistency, and motivation, most patients find the improvements far outweigh the small adjustments.

As mentioned, vision therapy will require short daily exercises and occasional office visits, but we’ll try to work around your schedule.

Usually, a minimum of 24 in office sessions is required. Due to the uniqueness of each individual, therapy can range from a few months to a few years – the exact length depends on your individual needs.

Vision Therapy improves how your eyes work together but doesn’t always replace the need for glasses or contact lenses. Many patients use therapy alongside their corrective lenses.

Yes! While often used with children, many adults with visual challenges, post-concussion/neurological problems, symptoms have seen significant improvements. Even if you don’t have visual challenges but want to work on your visual skills, efficiency and work performance, you can benefit from vision therapy.

Coverage varies by plan. Our staff can help you understand your benefits and provide documentation for medical aid claims. At this stage only Discovery medical aid will pay for vision therapy if you have money in your medical savings account.

Our team is just a phone call, WhatsApp or email away. You’ll receive direct contact details for your therapist. Don’t hesitate to reach out — even for something small.

We’ll guide you, but we need your commitment to follow through — whether it’s attending sessions, doing home exercises, or simply staying in touch about how things are going. Your effort is key to your success.

Families are welcome to observe, ask questions, and support therapy at home. For children especially, parent involvement is a major part of progress.

Vision Therapy is a safe, non-invasive, and well-established treatment supervised by trained professionals. All exercises and activities are tailored to your specific needs and pace, ensuring comfort throughout the process.

Yes – we believe in collaborative care, not one-size-fits-all solutions. Your preferences, values, and decisions are always respected.
