Helping the Eyes and Brain Work in Harmony

What is Syntonic Light Therapy?

Syntonic Light Therapy, also known as optometric phototherapy, is a gentle and non-invasive treatment that uses specific colours of light to help improve visual function and overall well-being. It’s been used in optometry for over 100 years to treat a wide range of vision problems — and more recently, it has shown promise in supporting recovery from brain injuries and emotional trauma.

How Does It Work?

Our eyes are more than just windows to the world — they also send information directly to areas of the brain that control things like focus, coordination, mood, and even hormone balance.

When these systems become unbalanced (often due to stress, injury, or strain), it can affect how well we see and process visual information. Syntonic Light Therapy uses specific light frequencies (colours) to gently restore balance in these systems, which in turn improves visual function and how we feel overall.

What Can It Help With?

Syntonic Light Therapy has been shown to help with:

  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Eye strain and fatigue
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia) or eye turns (strabismus)
  • Double vision
  • Poor depth perception
  • Light sensitivity or glare
  • Reduced peripheral (side) vision
  • Struggles with school or academic performance
  • Difficulty staying focused on near tasks at work
  • Inconsistent sports performance
  • Vision-related issues after a concussion or brain injury
  • Support for emotional trauma or anxiety
  • Recovery from chronic or severe illness

What Happens During Treatment?

Based on your needs, a certified practitioner will design a personalised therapy plan.

Your first step is a thorough evaluation, including:

  • Eye tracking and coordination
  • Peripheral vision and light sensitivity
  • Visual attention
  • Pupil reactions

A typical treatment involves:

  • Sitting comfortably while looking at a light for 20 minutes
  • 5 sessions per week, for around 4 weeks (20 sessions total)
  • Progress is carefully monitored, and the colours used may be adjusted as your therapy continues

Is It Safe?

Yes – Syntonic Light Therapy is safe, non-invasive, and well-tolerated by both children and adults. It’s often used alongside other treatments such as vision therapy, reading programs, or rehabilitation for brain injuries.
